“Crested wheat volunteers along every roadside. I cut it and tie it into bouquets. But alfalfa is the best. It grows hip high in the fields that crowd our fences.

I ride beside my husband on the windrower. The early May sky is cloud-cluttered, and the breeze carries the promise of rain. The hay machine is ancient, typical of the equipment most farmers must learn to work with. My husband and our neighbor have pooled their resources and come up with the $1,000 dollars needed to purchase it. They have spent countless hours replacing all of the planks of the great paddlewheel which gathers and stacks hay in neat queues after the long row of scissors have cut it. They have worked endlessly coaxing the beast to run. We maneuver up and back the length of the purple blossomed field inhaling the heady fragrance of newly mown hay.

There are few times that farmers do not pray for rain. Haying time is one of them. We hope for sunshine. If the weather holds, the hay will be ready to be baled within a week.”
